'Lets get walkers to Waterford'
These are the words of Olympian John Treacy and CEO of the Irish Sports Council who returned to his native county Waterford on Saturday last, October 6 to launch a set of Way Marked Looped Walks near the village of Rathgormack in the Comeragh Mountains. Jphn congratulated the voluntary group who developed the walks and said 'these are now part of a national network of trails, this will help attract walkers to the area.' He finished by says that Waterford could now compete with any other destination in Ireland.'
The set of guided walks was the brain child of the local development group, Rathgormack North Waterford Community Development Ltd. This group since its establishment almost 15 years ago has built a community centre that is the focal point of the widespread local community. The group also decided to capitalize on Rathgormack`s picturesque setting in the foothills of the Comeraghs by including hostel accommodation in the building. The inclusion of a climbing wall from the start was seen as a must in this dual purpose Community and Hiking centre.
The centre which is run by volunteers from the local community provides a venue for a wide range of local activities including Parent and Toddler group, sports hall for the adjacent primary school, scouts, GAA, Badminton and a meeting hall for a plethora of groups.
